Guardian wins $2.6m US grant to experiment with mobile news delivery

By Dominic Ponsford

The Guardian has won a $2.6m (£1.7m) grant from the US Knight Foundation to experiment with new ways to deliver news on mobile devices.

Guardian News and Media plans to use the money to “embed” a team of reporters, designers and developers in its US editorial team who have a brief to create new ways for people to consume content on their mobile devices.

The new "lab" will also look at new ways of engaging readers in “real time” story telling and finding new ways to improve reader-participation.

The Guardian will share all the data and research generated.

Knight Foundation vice president for journalism Jennifer Preston said: "With 50 per cent of news now accessed on smartphones, news organisations need to quickly figure out how to present news on a smaller screen while also taking full advantage of all that mobile technology has to offer to enhance the user experience

"Through the Guardian innovation lab we hope to develop a deeper understanding of how people use and consume mobile news, while also learning how best to engage audiences as participants in spreading and creating content.”

Guardian News and Media makes annual losses of around £20m a year and has an endowment fund of around £800m.
