Former journalist of the year Michael Gillard has left the Buzzfeed UK's investigations team nine months after joining the staff.
The Sunday Times journalist won the top British Journalism Awards prize in 2013 in recognition of an investigation into gangster David Hunt which put his life in danger.
Buzzfeed recruited former Sunday Times assistant editor Heidi Blake to head up its UK investigations team last year.
Gillard was recruited in June joining former BBC Panorama journalist Jane Bradley and Tom Warren, who was previously at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism.
When he joined Buzzfeed he said: "Coming from a strong freelance culture I have no fear of change, so I was made up when Heidi asked me to join her team and BuzzFeed's investigative vision for the digital age."
But his time at the digital publisher has evidently not been as positive as he hoped.
Gillard's stories for Buzzfeed included:
-
Sex, lies and interest rates: How a 'powerful criminal network' infiltrated the Bank of England'
-
These Cops Are Suspected Of Taking Bribes While Patrolling Soho
- And he also contributed to an investigation which revealed how Tory party funder Lycamobile deposits hundreds of thousands of pounds at post offices across Lon don in rucksacks full of cash.
Since leaving Buzzfeed Gillard has been writing again for The Sunday Times.
