Daily Mail is only pre-loaded app on the Kindle Fire ‘newsstand’

By Press Gazette

Associated Newspapers has launched a new app for Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablets called Mail Plus.

The app is described as an “enhanced version” of the Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday and supplements the Weekend magazine, You and Live.

In a release the company said:

Mail Plus was one of Amazon's official UK and European launch partners and is currently the only recommended UK national newspaper app in the Kindle Fire newsstand. Mail Plus is free to download for a 30-day trial period.

The app will offer enhanced functionality for Kindle Fire and Kindle Fire HD later this month.

Mail Plus is due to launch for the iPad and iPad Mini in mid-December 2012, and will deliver a more in-depth and interactive newspaper experience with a wealth of additional features across its editorial and commercial content.

Editorial enhancements include video, 360 degree panoramic photos, an interactive, 200-channel TV and radio guide and a stand-alone sports section with additional coverage. A new daily magazine is planned, featuring additional lifestyle content and interactive material such as a daily 5-minute cookery demonstration by Gary Rhodes.

The app will also enable e-commerce, with users able to link through to editorially featured retailers or brand websites.

Mail Plus is also expected to be available in the Google Play Store by Christmas.

Many of the larger-format advertisements carried in the newspaper will also appear in the same day’s Mail Plus and there will be additional opportunities for the sponsorship of sections, interactive commercial activity, e-commerce functionality and additional display advertising.

Rosemary Gorman, Group Advertisement Director of Mail Newspapers, commented: "Mail Plus takes the levels of engagement and interactivity with Mail Newspapers a stage further, providing a breakthrough opportunity for our advertisers to engage with our highly desirable audiences in a new, interactive dimension."
