Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Sunday People claims ITV has poached BBC’s Susanna Reid with a £1 million contract and the chance to work in London

By Darren Boyle

BBC Breakfast star Susanna Reid looks set to leave the corporation after being offered a £1m a year deal by rivals ITV to front a revamped morning show.

The 43-year-old journalist has signed the deal according to a report in The Sunday People after she was told by the BBC that she could not have her own show.

The mother-of-three currently presents BBC Breakfast but is believed to have been unhappy with the long daily commute from London to Salford, near Manchester.

The ITV move will allow Reid the chance to work within ten miles of her home, knocking several hours off her daily commute.

According to The People, Reid achieved a far higher profile last year after appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.

As a result, ITV has reportedly offered to quadruple her £250,000 salary as well as give her the opportunity to work in London, nearer her home.

In addition, ITV’s director of daytime Helen Warner is believed, according to The People, to have offered Susanna her own show.

According to a television insider who spoke to The People: “Susanna is seen as the future at ITV. She is loved by millions. She’s beautiful, intelligent and warm.

"She is seen as more highbrow than previous presenters who fronted the breakfast shows, which is exactly the direction ITV want to go in.”

The People also said that the show’s current host Lorraine Kelly is being moved to her own show which will broadcast five days a week

Reid had previously worked for the BBC News Channel, Radio Five Live and BBC Radio Bristol before moving to BBC Breakfast.

The BBC said it would not comment on individual staff contracts.
