Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

Russia Today says journalist who spoke out on Ukraine will be posted to Crimea

By Jack Fenwick

A journalist on Russian state-funded television has spoken out against the country’s military actions in Ukraine.

Abby Martin, whose programme ‘Breaking the Set’ airs on the Russia Today channel, said: “military intervention is never the answer. Russia was wrong”.

Ms Martin added: "All we can do now is hope for a peaceful outcome to a terrible situation… until then I'll keep telling the truth as I see it."

It was later announced by Russia Today that Martin, who admitted she doesn’t "know as much as I should about Ukraine's history or the cultural dynamics of the region", is to be sent to Crimea by her employers to “better her knowledge” of the crisis.

Speaking to The Telegraph, she said that she has editorial independence on her programme and that she would not be going to Eastern Ukraine.

Russia Today said: "We respect her views, and the views of all our journalists, presenters and program hosts, and there will be absolutely no reprimands made against Ms. Martin.”
