Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

NUJ: BBC will freeze pay for one in three journalists

By Jun Merrett

The National Union of Journalists has condemned a proposed BBC pay deal saying it will leave one in three journalists at the corporation without a pay rise.

The NUJ claims to have some 3,500 members at the BBC, so the deal would leave well over 1,000 journalists without an increase.

The BBC has offered a flat rate increase of £475 to staff earning less than £37,726 a year, the equivalent of a 1.2 per cent increase for those at the top end of that range.

However staff paid more than £37,726 will have their pay frozen.

NUJ general secretary Jeremy Dear said: “We appreciate the BBC is trying to cut the cake to help the lowest paid but it is unacceptable that a third of journalists would receive no pay rise and for the third year running BBC staff are being offered a deal which is significantly below inflation and significantly below the rise in the licence fee. Quite simply, the cake isn’t big enough.”

He added: “BBC staff have taken on additional workloads in the wake of thousands of job losses, are paying more for their pensions and it is time the BBC recognized their outstanding contribution to maintaining quality across the BBC.”
