GMG radio has commissioned a series on the realities of war in Afghanistan as told by serving soldiers as part of its £1m investment in independent productions this year.
The commercial radio network, part of Guardian Media Group, has unveiled the first ten productions commissioned through its initiative to encourage creativity in the commercial radio sector.
Productions include Blogs from the Bunkers, a two part series on online blogs from British soldiers in Afghanistan produced by Smooth Operations and a six part series on censorship throughout the last six decades, produced by Somethin’ Else.
The programmes will be broadcast from June on GMG radio’s Smooth, Real, Century or Rock Radio stations. GMG said that further programmes will be announced in due course.
The programmes were selected from over 300 submissions by independent producers.
Group programme director John Simons said: ‘This first raft of programmes will give listeners a feel for things to come and prove that creative and diverse programming can be just as at home on commercial radio as it is on the BBC.”
