Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

BBC wins seven RTS journalism awards

By Oliver Luft

The Ten o’clock News was named the news programme of the year as the BBC beat off competition from other broadcasters to scoop seven Royal Television Society annual journalism awards.

Sky News collected four awards last night including the coveted title of news channel of the year with judges praising its reporting of foreign news on a par with its traditional role as a domestic breaking news channel as it held off competition from Al Jazeera English and CNN International.

Its awards included the international news prize for its Pakistan: Terror’s Frontline reports, the innovation prize for Fallen Heroes, a broadcast and online project, and for reporter Alex Crawford, who was named television journalist of the year.

ITV News’ Julie Etchingham was named presenter of the year. ITV collected a second award as Meridian Tonight’s Justice for Hannah report won the nations and regions news coverage prize.

Channel 4 News scooped three awards at last night, including the news coverage prize for its reports on policing at last year’s G20 meeting in London, camera operator of the year and a new award to recognise coverage created by an independent producer or freelancer.

Presenting the Ten o’clock News with its award at last night’s ceremony, in London, judges praised the depth of its reporting strength both domestically and abroad.

“There was outstanding coverage from Afghanistan and Iran, a string of high-powered exclusives and impressive presentation,” judges said.

The BCC also collected the current affairs prize for Panorama’s What Happened to Baby P?, it also collected the nations and regions and international current affairs prizes alongside awards for scoop of the year, specialist journalist of the year and young journalist of the year.

The Judges’ Award went to Gaza News Teams, while Peter McHugh won the lifetime achievement award.
