Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

BBC Scotland staff to take industrial action over compulsory redundancies

By William Turvill

The BBC Scotland union chapel has voted unanimously in favour of industrial action over the threat of compulsory redundancies.

According to the National Union of Journalists, members decided to take action in the form of a work to rule – meaning they will only work their official hours – at a "well-attended" meeting on Friday.

With nine jobs reportedly at risk, the NUJ said offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, including Scottish Parliament, and Selkirk in the Borders will be affected.

BBC management were notified on Friday with a seven days notice for action, which is required under law.

“The BBC should withdraw the threat of compulsory redundancies in Scotland and take steps to redeploy staff at risk,” said Michelle Stanistreet, NUJ general secretary.

"Journalists will stand in solidarity with colleagues who risk losing their jobs and members have a clear mandate to take action to stop compulsory redundancies.

"It is not right to start the year with the threat of job cuts, compulsory redundancies are avoidable and the NUJ urges management to get round the table to resolve the dispute by providing sufficient redeployment opportunities to the staff affected."
