Fighting for quality news media in the digital age.

20 jobs go at Scottish talk radio station

By Martina Booth

Edinburgh’s Talk 107 radio station will stop broadcasting on Christmas Eve, after owner UTV failed to find a buyer.

UTV, announced in October that it was looking to sell off the station.

Scott Taunton, chief executive of UTV Radio (GB), said that it was ‘disappointing’that the station had to close.

He said: “We explored a number of options, including a proposed management buyout, but none proved to be viable. So unfortunately we have been left with no alternative but to close the station.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Talk 107 for their dedication and professionalism during these uncertain times.

“They have continued to produce entertaining, challenging and informative radio and I wish them all success in their future endeavours.”

The station’s closure will mean 11 permanent staff and nine freelances losing their jobs.

When it was launched in February 2006, Talk 107 was the UK’s only local FM commercial speech radio station outside London.

However, the station has struggled to find an audience, despite a revamp in March. According to the latest official Rajar audience figures, the station had 37,000 listeners, a 1.2 per cent share of the audience.
