The Daily Telegraph’s obituary of Bernard Manning asserted that “the only groups to escape his aim were the disabled and that trusty staple of the stand-up comedian, the mother-in-law. Mother-in-law jokes, he piously maintained, are offensive to older women.”
We now turn to the Daily Mail, which on the same day ran an obituary penned by Manning himself: “I’ll never forget the day I took my mother-in-law to the Chamber of Horrors in Madame Tussauds. One of the attendants whispered to me, ‘Please keep her moving, we’re trying to do a stock take’.â€
