Workshop offers tips to TV journalists on surviving in war zones

By Sarah Trotter

A workshop aimed at TV journalists working in war zones and riots will take place at the RAF Museum in North London on 31 March, hosted by the Guild of Television Cameramen (GTC).

The event follows the death on 22 February of the Sunday Times’s Marie Colvin alongside French photographer Remi Ochlik in Syria.

Colvin’s funeral is being held today at St Dominic Roman Catholic Church in Oyster Bay, Long Island – the Telegraph reports.

Entitled “Life in the firing line”, the workshop will applaud the work of men and women reporting from war zones as well as stressing the need for training and knowledge of the risks involved.

Speakers will include photographer Giles Duley who lost three limbs in Afghanistan, ITN’s Alex Thomson who has reported from many of the world’s trouble spots, and freelance cameraman Mike Reece.

The heads of Security at ITN and BSkyB will also discuss how preparation and training should be applied to working in hostile environments.

Life in the Firing Line costs £80 for non members of the GTC – and is free for members.
