The Manchester Evening News is celebrating Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary today by publishing its fictional newspaper.
For the first time The Weatherfield Gazette will hit the streets of Manchester when it’s distributed as a 32-page souvenir supplement with the MEN.
Today’s Gazette reports on the devastation brought to the fictional area of Weatherfield by this week’s tram crash, talking to one-time journalist Ken Barlow about the tragedy.
Eamonn O’Neal, managing editor of MEN Media, said: ‘We’re delighted to have worked closely with ITV to bring the Weatherfield Gazette to life.
‘Printing the local paper of UK television’s oldest and best-known soap is a real privilege and we’re honoured to be part of this iconic show’s 50th anniversary celebrations.”
This week’s Gazette features interviews with cast members including Helen Worth (who pays Gail in the soap) Sue Nicholls (Audrey) and Bev Callard (Liz).
The title will also feature a look at famous street villains and talks to other cast members about their roles.
Creator and producer Tony Warren and Phil Collinson talk about life behind the scenes while the paper also features a picture gallery of all 51 barmaids who have pulled pints in The Rovers Return alongside a comprehensive list of all the births, marriages and deaths the UK’s favourite street has witnessed over the past half century.
