Veteran broadcaster David Dunseith dies aged 76

By Myriam Dijck

Award-winning journalists David Dunseith, best known as the host of BBC Radio Ulster’s Talk Back programme, has died.

Dunseith grew up in Derry and began his career in the police. In the 1970s he switched careers to journalism after being offered a reporter job at Ulster Television, before becoming a producer and UTV Reports presenter.

UTV colleague Paul Clark said Dunseith had one of the most distinctive voices in broadcasting.

“He had a reputation for grilling his interviewees on both television, and radio and was admired for his professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as he sparred with politicians on TV and radio,” he told UTV.

SDLP MLA Conall McDevitt added: “He is leaving a broadcasting legacy which will be studied by generations of journalists as how to do the most difficult type of broadcasting at the most difficult of times, to an excellent standard.”

In 1993 Dunseith won a Sony Award for local braodcaster of the year while his Talk Back programme gained further recognition at the 1997 and 2006 awards, according to a BBC report.

Dunseith presented the BBC’s Seven Days programme until May this year when he retired.
