The Independent has taken on six members of staff to upload breaking news stories throughout the day for its newly-relaunched website.
Independent.co.uk previously carried only news stories that had been repurposed from the newspaper.
The relaunch, unveiled this morning, aims to give users access to more blogs, forums, user generated polls, video and audio.
Netherlands-based company Getronics, which has worked on a number of European newspaper websites, has been developing the site.
The paper’s monthly magazine Independent Music will now have an online presence with audio and downloads.
Independent editor-in-chief Simon Kelner said: “This is just the beginning of our online expansion, which reaffirms our commitment to serving our growing audience at home and abroad across all platforms.
“NRS research has shown that readers of The Independent are more likely to access the internet than the readers of any other title. This relaunch, full of innovative ideas and quality journalism, will further strengthen our position.”
