Trinity Mirror wants freedom to buy more newspapers

By paulmcnally

Sly Bailey is expected to use her appearance before the House of Lords Communications Committee on Tuesday to call for a relaxation of competition rules in the regional newspaper market.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the Trinity Mirror chief executive argues that the current competition laws are outdated in an age when regional papers compete with online sources for a share of classified advertising revenue.

A company source tells the paper: “Trinity Mirror recently closed eight titles in the Midlands that could have been sold to Johnston Press had the rules been different.

“This is not an academic point, it is about real newspapers and real jobs.”
