Tom Crone warned Andy Coulson police had Glenn Mulcaire and Clive Goodman ‘bang to rights’ court told

By Press Association

News International lawyer Tom Crone sent Andy Coulson an email saying the police had Clive Goodman and Glenn Mulcaire “bang to rights”, the Old Bailey heard.

The jury of nine women and three men were shown a copy of the email from Crone to then editor Coulson sent in 2006 following allegations of hacking.
The email discloses what Rebekah Brooks had told Crone from a briefing she received from police into the investigation.

The document, in bullet-point form, outlines the current state of the police investigation and plans to expand it to other News of the World journalists.

Crone wrote: "They (police) are confident they have Clive (Goodman) and GM (Mulcaire) bang to rights on the Palace intercepts.

"Re GM: The raids on his property produced numerous voicemail records.

"The recordings and notes demonstrate a pattern of 'victims' being focused on for a given period and then being replaced by the next one, which becomes flavour of the week."

Crone's bulletin also includes the perception of what the investigation would mean for the NoW.

In it, Crone wrote: "They suggest that they were not widening the case to include other NoW people but would do so if they got direct evidence, say NoW journos directly accessing the voicemails (this is what did for Clive)."

In an email from Coulson to Mr Crone, the editor described how the probation service had an "anti-NoW agenda".

All of the defendants deny all of the charges.

The trial continues.
