Times ventures outside the paywall to launch Tumblr blog

By admin

The Times yesterday launched a Tumblr blog for its opinion section that will remain outside of the paywall.

The Tumblr page, curated by online opinion editor James Dean, provides additional commentary and multimedia content from Times regular columnists, including Hugo Rifkind, Daniel Finkelstein and Oliver Kamm.

No paid-for content will appear on the page, instead it will feature editorial images, links to other magazines and twitter updates.

The launch comes after The Times took down its paywall for the Jubilee weekend, the first time since News International implemented the idea in 2010.

The Times is expected to once again remove its paywall for two or three key dates during the Olympic Games this summer.

A Times spokesperson said: “Like many other publishers we have created a page on the blogging site Tumblr to promote some of our journalism. No material that was previously paid for has been made free. Our writers will simply give a short taster of what is in the Opinion section and link to other interesting opinion writing on the web.”
