Syrian Electronic Army believed to be behind AP White House explosions bogus tweet

By Press Gazette

A group said to be supporting Syrian president Bashar Assad may be behind the hacking yesterday of the main Twitter account of Associated Press.

The fake Twitter message from AP said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Obama was injured. It sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average down 143 points, although it quickly recovered.

AP suspended the account following the hack.

A Twitter account linked to the Syrian Electronic Army claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group has previously hacked the Twitter accounts of Sky News Arabia, BBC Weather, BBC Arabic Online and BBC Radio Ulster.
