Shares in Trinity Mirror, Daily Mail and General Trust and Newsquest’s US parent company Gannett have all outperformed Google over the past three months.
With the exception of Johnston Press, which published its annual report yesterday, the major UK regional newspaper publishers have all outperformed the Google in the past quarter, Associated Northcliffe Digital strategic analyst Seamus McCauley points out on his blog.
Of course, the story changes somewhat when you take the longer view. But McCauley writes: “If the falling share price of some newspaper companies are proof that newspapers are not meeting the challenge of Google, what does the even-faster falling shareprice of Google tell us?”
As Press Gazette columnist Peter Kirwan asked last week, has the City lost its marbles over media shares?
