A group of Irish university journalism students have launched a newspaper to serve a disadvantaged local community.
The students from the University of Limerick in Ireland have produced a 16-page freesheet for the community of Moyross on the outskirts of Limerick City as part of their university course.
The first edition of the Moyross Voice was printed yesterday at the printing press of local weekly title, the Limerick Leader.
The project is part of a community out reach initiative supported by the university.
Moyross is a local authority housing estate with around 4,000 residents. The area regularly features in the press in connection with anti-social behaviour and drug crime.
The 12 students sourced and wrote all the stories themselves in visits to Moyross, working with community development workers. They produced the paper in the university’s newsroom.
The title was distributed on Wednesday to the 4,000 local residents.
Mary Dundon, director of the journalism course at Limerick University, said the aim of the project was to give the students hands-on experience of writing and producing a local newspaper.
The university plans to produce papers for other disadvantaged communities in Limerick.
