Revamp of ITV1 Tonight show to cost jobs but no compulsory redundancies at Channel 4 News

By admin

ITV is cutting 18 jobs from its Tonight current affairs show as part of a cost saving reorganisation that will see ITN become more heavily involved in producing the programme, according to reports.

Tonight editor, Mike Lewis, and his deputy editor will be amongst those leaving, according to Guardian.co.uk, ITV is hoping to avoid compulsory job losses through voluntary redundancy and other measures.

The reorganisation will see Tonight move to a new weekly peak-time slot in the ITV1 schedule, from next year, as ITV more closely collaborates with ITN on certain shows.

ITV’s regional news teams around the country are also expected to become more involved in production of the programme.

Guardian.co.uk also reported that ITN has avoided having to make any compulsory redundancies at Channel 4 News after staff decided to accept voluntary terms or agreed to be transferred to other parts of the company.

ITN said earlier this year that around 33 positions out of 149 at Channel 4 News would go following a decision to axe More4 News and the lunchtime bulletins on the main network.
