Launch editor of Prospect David Goodhart is moving on to an editor-at-large role 15 years after he founded the up-market current affairs monthly.
Circulation has steadily increased under his stewardship from 17,000 in 2000 to the current total of 28,446 according to ABC (of which 8,500 are freebie copies).
The job ad for his replacement says: “The successful applicant will be a talent magnet, a commissioner, editor and writer of distinction with experience of long form narrative journalism, and above all, share our commitment to taking an already successful magazine to the next level.”
At a briefing for journalists in 2008, Spectator Publisher Andrew Neil revealed that he had been keen to buy Prospect but that the price sought was too high. I recall Neil being extremely complimentary about Goodhart during that lunch, saying that if had bought Prospect he would have insisted as part of the deal that Goodhart stayed on as editor.
