The national newspaper industry Press Awards, organised by the Society of Editors, isto have 33 categories next year – eight more than last year.
New sub categories are to be included for the features, columns and interview prizes to “reflect the different styles of newspapers”.
The new categories should ensure that the tabloid end of the industry receives a more even split of the categories. Last year the ‘broadsheets’ beat the tabloids by 15 prizes to eight, with no prizes at all going to the UK’s top-selling daily – The Sun.
The closing date for entries is 24 January, 2012.
The awards dinner will be held at the Lancaster hotel in London on 20 March. Last year the event was held at the Savoy.
The Press Awards is the successor of the British Press Awards and was held for the first time last year. Proceeds go to the Society of Editors, with a contribution also being made to the Journalists’ Charity.
The Society of Editors is also to again run the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards next year, at a central London location on 25 May.
