The Press Association (PA) is to present a selection of images photographed during the London riots, titled London Riots Revisited.
The exhibition, held at The Strand Gallery, will focus on images shot by photographer Lewis Whyld in London in 2011.
According to PA, Whyld was one of the first professional photographers on the street as the riots broke.
The exhibition will feature images used in The Guardian, The Independent and The New York Times, as well as photographs not seen before.
“I have worked in both Egypt and Afghanistan earlier in the year, but I didn’t expect to be experiencing a similar hostile environment on London’s streets,” said Whyld.
“The scenes of looting, chaos and violence were shocking and had to be recorded, even if it meant I shot many of my pictures from a mobile phone using the beam of police helicopter searchlights.”
Picture editor Martin Keene said: “PA takes great pride in having photojournalists in the right place at the right time to produce outstanding content. Lewis’ presence in Tottenham, the first and fiercest night of unrest, is one such example.
“The exhibition is a perfect platform to highlight the often dangerous work that PA photographers undertake. These captured moments bring to life what is happening on the ground, resonating with audiences around the world.”
The exhibition is open to the public and will run from the 3 – 10 February 2013 at Proud’s, The Strand Gallery, 32 John Adam Street, London, WC2 6NB.
