The Times today carries a tribute to one of ITN’s first newscasters – Huw Thomas, who has died at the age of 81.
Thomas was a lawyer but joined ITN after answering a job ad in 1956.
In the early days of the broadcaster it faced a 14-day rule which banned it from covering topical political issues for two weeks, The Times reports.
The eloquent Thomas used to receive sacks of fan mail, the Times reports: “He had a debonair on-screen personality, with a fine voice and black swept-back hair.”
He left ITN in 1964 to set up his own company making medical and corporate documentaries.
