News International is reported to be planning to put the website of the News of The World behind a paywall from October.
According to New Media Age (full version here via Mad.co.uk), the UK newspaper publishing wing of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation will follow up this move by also placing the website of The Sun behind the paywall later in the year.
Paid-for access to the News of The World website will ‘hinge on exclusive video content, distributed across an overhauled site and app”, the report states.
News International declined to comment on the matter to Press Gazette this afternoon.
The move to overhaul both websites with a paywall is not a great revelation; afterall it was more than a year ago that Rupert Murdoch vowed to place all his newspaper websites behind paywalls and has since introduced paid-for access to the new websites of The Times and The Sunday Times.
NMA reports that like thetimes.co.uk and thesundaytimes.co.uk, the News of The World website will offer an introductory rate for subscribers in the first months.
