New editor of the Wiltshire Times Neville Smith has been handed a redundancy notice less than six months after taking up his job.
Paul Linford at Holdthefrontpage reports that Newsquest Wiltshire is slashing the number of journalists at weekly titles the Wiltshire Times and the Gazette and Herald from ten to four. The deputy editors’ jobs have been made redundant and the editors must compete with each other for just one job.
The changes are bound to hasten circulation decline for the titles – which remain nonetheless relatively big sellers.
In the last release of regional press ABC figures The Times dropped 7.7 per cent to 18,402 and the Wiltshire Gazette dropped 5.7 per cent to 25,707.
