Rageh Omaar, the former BBC reporter who joined Al-Jazeera has warned that the Arab news channel’s freedom to report is under threat.
According to the Observer, the Arab League – comprising 22 states – is proposing new laws which would allow members to close down broadcasters who are critical of government.
Omaar says the threat is going unreported in the western media. “Every time an Arab journalist looks for support from western colleagues, there is silence,” he says.
