Motor Sport’s Bill Boddy: ‘Longest serving working journalist in UK’

The Guardian has paid tribute to William Boddy, the former editor of Motor Sport who has died last month at 98.

Known to his devoted readers as Bill, or as “WB”, he was – according to the Guardian – possibly the longest-serving working journalist in Britain. He submitted his first article for Motor Sport in 1930 and the last one just one week before he died.

Still working on a typewriter, he would make hand-written corrections to his copy that in 81 years of journalism usually involved vintage and classic cars.

The Guardian obit notes that his first article was on his biggest passion – Brooklands in Weybridge, Surrey, the world’s first purpose-built motor-racing circuit.
