Man charged with murdering Dublin journalist transferred to Central Mental Hospital

By Darren Boyle

A man who admitted killing Dublin journalist Tom O’Gorman has been transferred to the Central Mental Hospital in advance of a further court hearing.

Saverio Bellante was charged with the murder of his landlord on Monday morning at Blanchardstown District Court in west Dublin.

Bellante told detectives investigating the case “I am guilty” when charged with the murder. During Monday’s brief hearing, judge David McHugh ordered that Bellante was to be given a medical assessment while in Cloverhill Prison.

Following that assessment, the 34-year-old Italian was transferred from the prison to the secure Central Mental Hospital in Dundrum on Dublin’s southside.

Also during Monday’s hearing, Bellante indicated that he did not want legal representation and said he was happy to defend himself.

Bellante is expected to reappear at Cloverhill District Court this morning at 10.30.

O’Gorman (pictured above), whose body was found at his home at Beechpark Avenue at 2am on Sunday, suffered extensive injuries.

Bellante was arrested at the scene and taken to Blanchardstown Garda Station for questioning.

A post-mortem has been completed by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy.

Details of O'Gorman's funeral have not yet been released.
