Mail Online launches beta version of redesigned site

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Mail Online has today unveiled a public beta of its redesigned website and is seeking feedback and bug reports from its readers on the new design.

The beta version, will be running weekdays for several weeks between 9am and 7pm. The home page, along with three inside sections – TV & Showbusiness, Femail and Sport – will be run live alongside the current site.

Like many recent news website redesigns such as BBC News and Guardian.co.uk, the new Mail Online is wider to take advantage of higher-resolution screens. Also in keeping with recent design trends, most of the primary navigation elements have been moved to a horizontal bar along the top of the site.

The new Mail Online includes a bookmarking tool called “My Stories”, which allows readers to clip stories to read later

According to ABCe figures, Mail Online had just over 17m unique users in February. Associated Newspapers says this represents 133 per cent year-on-year growth. Mail Online is now the second most-widely read British national newspaper website behind Guardian.co.uk.

Yesterday, the Daily Mail group’s digital division released research suggesting that Associated Newspapers combined print and online reach now covers 45 per cent of the UK population.
