The Politics Show breached BBC editorial guidelines by making inaccurate claims about the Heysel and Hillsborough disasters, the corporation’s Editorial Complaints Unit has found.
The ECU upheld a complaint, submitted by a Liverpool FC supporter, over statements made late last year by reporter Patrick Burns, the Liverpool Echo notes.
Burns had said that the collapse of the Heysel Stadium in Brussels in 1985 during a Liverpool-Juventus match had led to the segregation of fans in English football matches. In fact, the practice was already commonplace.
