The Liverpool Echo published thousands of copies of a special issue of the paper yesterday following the verdict on the Hillsborough inquests,
Yesterday’s verdict found that 96 football fans, 95 of them Liverpool fans, were unlawfully killed, after two years of hearings.
The front page of Tuesday’s special afternoon issue of the Liverpool Echo, (pictured below) , ran with the headline ‘Unlawful Killing’ and the front page also published the lyric ‘At the end of the story is a golden sky’ from the song ‘You’ll never walk alone’ below the masthead.
The Gerry and the Pacemakers song is sang by Liverpool fans before every home match.
Today’s issue of the Liverpool Echo features an image of Liverpool’s St George’s Hall, which is adorned with a large banner bearing the names of those who lost their lives on the 15 April 1989 and the words “truth” and “justice”. The headline above the image printed in red and white is ‘Angels & Demons’.
Liverpool Echo editor Alastair Machray, said: “”We are not worried about sales, we are concerned about marking the moment. Can we help Liverpool mark the occasion in the proper way?”
In the city where the tragedy took place Sheffield, the city’s daily paper the Sheffield Star published a 16 page tribute issue which ran with the headline “Hillsborough this time it’s the truth”. The paper itself ran with the headline “Sheffield in the dock” in bold white type amid a black background.
