The London Mayor Boris Johnson is facing problems in meeting a manifesto pledge to make crime statistics for the city widely available because of problems over legality of releasing them.
The Conservative mayor has told Metropolitan Police he wants detailed crime maps of the city, in response to campaigns such as The Guardian’s Free Our Data.
But according to the Financial Times today, the Information Commissioner has warned that disclosing the figures – which would allow online news sites to create their own maps and features on crime – could breach data protection law.
