Japanese TV reporters face ‘insider dealing’ probe

By paulmcnally

Japanese public-service broadcaster NHK is facing a backlash from viewers, who are threatening to stop paying their licence fee, after it emerged that three business journalists are being investigated over claims of insider dealing.

According to The Times, the trio are accused of buying shares in a restaurant chain shortly before NHK broadcast a story which caused the share price to climb 13 per cent.

The insider dealing allegations are the latest in a series of lapses at the broadcaster, the paper says.

“Last week, viewers were terrified when a computer glitch resulted in them being bombarded with information about an earthquake that had not happened.”
