Indy claims its web readers ‘rocketed’ in 2007

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Looking at latest ABC figures, which saw The Sun dip to below 3million, Tim Luckhurst in the Independent on Sunday sees the silver lining in the online readership figures which show large increases in readership of newspaper web sites:

Digital publishing lets papers expand their readership, and last week the World Association of Newspapers launched a website to promote the use of cross-media audience measurement. There is the revenue out there to support quality journalism, but until advertisers grasp the value of combined print and digital papers, they will not pay top rates for online campaigns.”

The Independent, of course, does not yet publish ABCe figures for its soon-to-be relaunched web site, but Luckhurst insists that “online readers of The Independent and Independent on Sunday rocketed in 2007.” Roy Greenslade is skeptical.

The Sindy’s diary, meanwhile, reports that Daily Mail reporters were last week told that they would be expected to file stories for the website as well as the paper, and claims that Telegraph reporters reacted with “widespread relief” to an announcement they they would no longer be require to produce podcasts.
