Guardian chess columnist beat Bobby Fischer

By Dominic wireposts

The Guardian’s veteran chess columnist beat Bobby Fischer in one of a series of “blitz” games in 1960, Stephen Moss reveals today. Barden was apparently too modest to include this in his report of Fischer’s death last week.

After Barden won his match, Fischer apparently said: “You British weakie, now I’m going to crush you.”

Barden’s 51-year-old column will apparently become the world’s longest running when it appears next Saturday.
