Google: Traffic to FT.com doubled after change in pay model

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Traffic to FT.com from Google doubled after the site adopted its part-free access strategy last September, according to Google’s vice president of content partnerships David Eun.

The New York Times website has had a similar increase in traffic from Google searches since lowering its TimesSelect paywall, Google’s vice president of content partnerships Eun said in an interview with The Deal.

“Whether you have a pay model at a particular destination or whether you have something ad-supported, we think it’s a missed opportunity if you don’t sprinkle your content out there and try to engage with people,” Eun said in the interview.

Under the new access model, FT.com readers have free access for up to 30 stories per month, but the first click from Google News searches is not counted toward the quota.
