Former Indonesian premier seeks £50m in Time libel suit

By Patrick

The former Indonesian president Suharto could receive up to to $107m (£53.5m) in a US libel suit against Time magazine, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The amount, which would be one of the largest ever libel settlements, has been set by the US Supreme Court, overturning two lower court rulings, though the magazine is seeking a review by the Court.

Suharto sued over an article published in Time’s Asian edition in 1999 headlined “Suharto Inc.” which accused him of leaving a legacy of corruption and nepotism in the East Asian nation after he stepped down as leader in 1998.

The WSJ said that the president’s legal team did not dispute most of the content of the piece, but took issue with factual innaccuracies such as “Suharto Inc.” not being a real company.
