Financial Times hits 1 million followers on Google+

By James Read

The Financial Times has clocked up 1 million followers on the social networking site Google+.

The paper remains well ahead of its rivals, with the likes of The Guardian and The Independent in second and third place with 201,917 and 164,549 followers respectively.

The FT said it remained ‘focused on achieving a high-quality digital presence and personalization’on the platform, adding: ‘We also wanted to create additional touch points for our readers, allowing them to read FT content where and how they choose.”

A spokesperson said that ‘part of the social media team’s strategy has been to play up to the highly visual nature of the platform and rich-media content such as videos, images and infographics have proved particularly successful”.

Other strategies employed by the FT on Google+ include placing an ’emphasis on captivating content and exclusive reporting’whilst ‘sharing a wide variety of content from correspondents around the world.”

The FT’s Twitter account has 754,653 followers and its Facebook page has attracted 330,379 ‘likes.’

Elsewhere on Google+, The Sun, Daily Express and Daily Star are the only national titles without a presence.
