Fears that harassment is spreading to foreign media as Pakistan deports US journalist

US journalist Nicholas Schmidle was deported from Pakistan on 11 January.

It is thought his deportation is linked to his atricle, Next-Gen Taliban that appeared in New York Times Magazine on 6 January and details some of the emerging conflicts between Taliban leaders and Pakistan’s Islamic fundamentalist leaders.

The Committee to Protect Journalists remarked that it was “unfortunately accustomed to reporting on the government’s attacks on the local media, but now harassment seems to be spreading to foreign journalists as well”.

Steve Clemons on the Huffington Post writes that “there is a pattern of intimidation of intimidation of journalists clearly emerging in Pakistan”.

The Pakistani government has denied that Schmidle was deported and claimed he had left of his own volition.
