Details are beginning to emerge about what we can expect from Lord Carter’s final Digital Britain report, which culture secretary Ben Bradshaw is expected to announce to the Commons at about 3.30pm tomorrow afternoon.
Funding regional TV news
Various newspaper reports over the weekend have confirmed that the BBC looks set to lose about £130m in licence fee cash currently set aside for digital switchover support. About £100m of this could go to independent local news consortia to provide the regional news on ITV1. Another £30m could go to rolling out broadband.
BBC/C4 tie-up
The Sunday Times says this hasn’t been finalised in time for the report. The FT adds that there are “still issues of substance as well as detail to iron out”, and there remains a “very real possibility” of failure.
Media ownership rules
These look set to be relaxed, but the Guardian says other threats to the local press such as the issue of online aggregators including Google News do not get a mention in the final report.
