Dermot Murnaghan: Young ‘don’t see any difference’ between TV news channels

By Martin Stabe wirepost

Young viewers can’t distinguish between TV news providers, according to newsreader Dermot Murnaghan, who has moved to Sky News last week after five-years at BBC Breakfast.

Asked by Metro whether there is a status hierarchy between television news employers, Murnaghan said: “I don’t think so. I’ve worked for Channel 4 News, ITN, BBC and now Sky news, there’s no pecking order. You sometimes come across older people who say they were never allowed to watch ITV as a child and some people hang onto those prejudices. Younger people don’t see any difference between channels and don’t even watch programmes on the television anymore, they watch it on the Internet.”

The main difference between his old and new jobs, Murnaghan says, “is that I can stay in bed for an extra couple of hours. I’ve been getting up at 3.45am for the last five years to present Breakfast and it’s seeped into my soul. I feel like I’ve got permanent jet lag.”
