The Mail on Sunday, Sunday Times and Observer are all predicting fireworks at Independent News and Media’s annual general meeting on Wednesday.
Billionaire “rebel shareholder” Denis O’Brien, who has been steadily growing his stake in the Independent publisher, is expected to vote against resolutions to re-elect a number of directors.
O’Brien is also expected to use the AGM to give an update on a report he commissioned on the company’s corporate governance, described by the Observer as “damning”. It argues that the INM board is far too big and not independent enough.
INM has already retaliated by commissioning its own independent report, giving it a clean bill of health.
O’Brien and INM chief executive Anthony O’Reilly have been arch-rivals for more than a decade.
