David Cameron: News broadcasters should hand riot footage to police

By Dominic wireposts

Prime minister David Cameron has said that broadcasters should hand over to police unbroadcast footage of rioting which took place across England this week.

Journalism.co.uk reports that, in answer to a question, today he said that he would certainly encourage media organisations to hand over footage to police.

He told the House of Commons during an emergency session: “Everyone has a responsibility. The media has a responsibility and I hope they will accept it.”

This is an issue which often comes up when news organisations are filming civil disorder.

Broadcasters have resisted such orders in the past.

The fear is that if journalists come to be seen as an information-gathering arm of the police, they could subject themselves to more danger when covering future events.
