Daily Record overtakes The Sun in Scotland on readership, says Trinity

By admin

Scotland’s Daily Record now has more readers than The Sun in Scotland, according to publishers Trinity Mirror.

In a release yesterday the company quoted figures from the latest National Readership Survey showing the Record’s year-on-year readership had increased by around 3,000 while The Sun lost almost 100,000 readers.

The figures also show that the Daily Record and Sunday Mail had a combined reach of 1.4m readers, or around 1-in-3 of the adult population in Scotland.

The editor-in-chief of the Scottish Daily Record & Sunday Mail, Allan Rennie, said: ‘I am delighted that the Daily Record has re-established itself as the best-read newspaper in Scotland and relegated The Sun into second place.

‘The fact that 100,000 have deserted The Sun, while our readership has increased, shows that Scots value journalism that puts their interests first.

“This means we truly lead the Scottish market with the Sunday Mail read by over 1 million each week and easily outselling The Sun on Sunday”.

According to Trinity’s release:

  • Total Daily Record readership, including readers out with Scotland, is 880,000.
  • In Scotland the Daily Record’s readership has been consistent, up by 3,000 year-on-year to 856,000.
  • The Daily Record has overtaken the Sun, reclaiming the position of best-read daily title in Scotland. It has 43,000 readers more than the Sun (813,000) in Scotland.
  • The Sun has lost almost 100,000 readers across Scotland year on year.
  • The Sunday Mail’s market-leading readership is now 1,036,000 – with 999,000 readers in Scotland. This is down by 3% year-on-year.
  • With no data yet available for the Sun on Sunday, the Sunday Mail now reaches 63% more readers than the 2nd placed Sunday title in Scotland (Sunday Post).
  • Combined, the Daily Record and Sunday Mail’s Scottish readership is 1,403,000, reaching 32.4% of all adults in Scotland and up by 52,000 year on year.
