The Daily Mail is planning to move subeditors from a four-day week to a nine-day fortnight, reports Media Guardian.
Staff have been informed in a letter from assistant editor Charles Garside, who said the change would be implemented “as soon as reasonably possible”, but as asked for comments and suggestions.
Garside said that the arrangements would bring the paper in line with other Fleet Street papers.
Garside said: “Technological advances mean that this approach is outdated as the production cycle now takes place over fewer hours each day,” he said.
“Earlier print deadlines on Friday have shortened the process further and any future changes to the edition structure are only likely to continue that trend.”
The Daily Telegraph is currently implementing a ten day fortnight with staff, which has caused a backlash from the NUJ.
