Daily Mail claims campaign victory for Normandy veterans

By Dominic wireposts

You can say what you like about the alleged diminishing power of the printed word – but when the Daily Mail launches a campaign, it generally gets a result.

Today the Mail claims a major victory in its campaign to get the Government to recognise the ceremonies in France to mark the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

It reports a Government U-turn with news that Prime Minister Gordon Brown WILL be attending the commemoration ceremony in Normandy on 6 June. The Government is also now talking to veterans groups over providing travel assistance, which had previously been denied, the Mail reports.

The move comes just a day after the Mail launched its campaign to force the Government to rethink its decision to ignore the 65th anniversary of D-Day.

The Daily Mail’s Ban the Bags campaign last year has helped bring about a major reduction in plastic bag use by British shops.

In 2006 the Mail helped scupper proposals for a series of “super-casinos” throughout the UK with its Kill the Casino Bill campaign.
