CNET launches green reviews site

By Martin Stabe wirepost

CNET Networks UK has launched SmartPlanet, a consumer reviews and lifestyle website featuring ethical and sustainable products.

SmartPlanet will cover organic and fairtrade fashion and food along with energy-saving gadgets and hybrid cars.

Products reviewed on th site will receive a ‘SmartScore’ that rates items on their environemntal criteria as well as price and quality, based on manufacturers corporate social responsibility documents and third-party analysis from non-governmental organisations.

The site will also aim to expose “green washing” efforts by companies to exaggerate the green or ethical credentials of their products.

The site, edited by Adam Vaughan, is backed by an editorial board including representatives from Friends of the Earth, the Fairtrade Foundation and the Energy Saving Trust.

Vaughan has previously launched several other environmentally-focused websites, including Shiny Media’s ethical consumer blog Hippyshopper and Newconsumer.com. He has also worked at gadget magazines Stuff and T3.
